Climate Technology

Traditional ways of building are not just inadequate, they’re also irresponsible. At our core is ZS2’s commitment to research and development to commercialize technology at scale to decarbonize the construction industry.

Responsible Industry Transformation

Think of climate technology as an advanced toolkit for building a better planet. It encompasses a suite of solutions and methodologies aimed at addressing climate challenges, designed to revolutionize how we interact with our environment. Together we face a universal challenge that will take collaborative action to drive change at scale.

In the construction world, climate technology is akin to a modern blueprint for sustainable, resilient building. It involves using innovative materials and construction techniques that minimize environmental impact while maximizing effectiveness. Climate technology encompasses a broader scope of technologies, policies, and practices that aim to combat climate change, including both mitigation (reducing emissions) and adaptation (building resilience to climate impacts). While sustainability focuses on reducing environmental impact, climate resilience addresses the escalating challenges posed by our changing climate. Resilient structures are designed to withstand extreme weather events, rising temperatures, and other climate-related risks. By adopting climate-responsive practices and technology, the construction industry becomes a key player in creating structures that are both resilient and environmentally conscious.

Inside ZS2’s TechCentre, cement climate technology is the evolution of construction materials and we’re at the forefront. By innovating the cement production process, we’ve actioned transformative climate technology. This isn’t just about mixing cement. It’s a deliberate choice to optimize the building lifecycle from start to finish.

Transformative Climate Technology

Step 1

Capture CO2

Think of this step as using a giant chemistry vacuum cleaner. Using ZS2 Technologies mobile CCUS Direct Air Capture Unit, we initiate the climate transformation process by capturing  CO2 directly from the air. This unit is not only mobile and scalable but can also be deployed from practically any location.

Step 2

Make it Useful

Advanced material science and R&D takes center stage in the second step. The captured CO2 is sequestered, repurposed, and utilized into high performance building materials. This isn’t just environmental stewardship; it’s a deliberate effort to turn CO into a resource and make it valuable.

Step 3

Build Better

Leverage the innovation in step 1 & 2 to build high-performance, climate-resilient structures. Here, we see the tangible results. The structures built are not just functional; they actively contribute to lowering both embodied and operational carbon footprints, setting a new standard for responsible construction.

Harnessing the potential of climate tech
through ZS2 Technologies

As part of the global XPRIZE Carbon Removal competition, we were 1 of 10 lucky teams out of 1180 selected to share our story and how we will build a better planet using ZS2 technology and research. Check it out!

Decarbonizing the Construction Industry Through Climate Technology

Innovation in the buildings sector is critical to achieving decarbonization. Climate technology is our response to realizing that our actions have consequences and leveraging innovation to build better. Buildings are responsible for 39 % of  CO2  emissions globally, with a staggering 11 percent of global emissions coming from the construction of buildings and manufacturing of building materials. To change this, we need innovations that reinvent how buildings, and their materials are planned, built, sourced, and managed.

From day one, ZS2 Technologies has been committed to developing and commercializing construction technologies that are better for people and the planet. Since then, we have only accelerated our momentum to drive bold, transformative industrial solutions for real impact. Our technology isn’t just a concept or prototype in the lab, our technology has been recognized and verified by numerous third-party experts, and powerhouse partners and organizations.

  • Securing multiple government grants and funding  won from municipal, provincial and federal levels for continued research and development.
  • Selected for Go Build 2023 dedicated to advancing circularity and decarbonization.. An exclusive program and strategic collaboration between Greentown Labs, the largest climatetech incubator in North America, and Saint-Gobain, a multinational powerhouse in construction and industrial materials. Out of a highly competitive pool of more than 100 applicants from 27 countries, ZS2 Technologies, emerged as a trailblazer in magnesium-based advanced building products and our proprietary carbon capture and utilization technology.
  • Worldwide Top 60 milestone finalists for X-Prize Carbon Removal Competition. Over 450 proposals were submitted and reviewed by 70 expert reviewers, making this not only the largest XPRIZE to date but also the world’s largest technical review of carbon dioxide removal projects. Most of these teams represent many of the best and brightest minds in the carbon dioxide removal industry today.

Together, we need to create a global industry transformation that will require many new technologies, and innovative ways to permanently remove carbon from the atmosphere as we collectively figure out how to live on a changing planet.

This is a place to start. It’s only up from here.

Circularizing buildings involves adopting circular economy principles in construction, emphasizing the reuse, recycling, and repurposing of materials to minimize waste and environmental impact. Carbon utilization in the carbon loop includes repurposing captured CO2 for the creation of advanced building materials and other valuable products. These applications demonstrate the transformation of carbon from a waste product into a valuable resource.

Beyond environmental benefits, climate technology can create new economic opportunities, enhance energy efficiency, and promote the development of sustainable practices, making industries more resilient and future-proof.

No, in fact, it can enhance structural integrity. Carbon utilization in high-performance cement can lead to materials with improved compressive strength, durability, and resistance to environmental stressors, making structures more resilient and long-lasting.
